- the body lotion that you use on your skin when you come out of the shower;
- hand cream that you rub on your hands;
- cleaning products that you use when cleaning;
- hair spray;
- sports and swimming;
- the perfume that you spray on your neck and wrists.
These are the reasons that your Biba jewellery loses its shine and can even turn dark. How is that possible? Look at it from a chemical perspective for a moment, and we'll explain this quickly: silver reacts with sulfur - a type of gas - causing the silver to oxidize, or rust. Sad but true. The silver jewellery from Biba, which is silver plated, also reacts with sulfur. And there is something else happening: because there is just a thin layer of silver (or gold) on your jewellery, the layer can wear off.
Okay, now we know why our jewellery gets a bit scuffed over time. When the layer of a plated piece of jewellery wears out, you cannot restore it. So the question is: how do you prevent this from happening?
1. DIRTY JEWELLERY? USE A DRY CLOTH
Is your Biba jewellery dirty? With a soft dry cloth (or a cleaning glove) you can make your jewellery shine again. Rub your jewellery gently, to make sure that the plated layer doesn’t come off. Note: do not immerse your cloth in a cleaning product. If you try to clean the plated layer with a cleaning product, you’ll damage it instead. You want to prevent that from happening!
2. AVOID CLEANING PRODUCTS
In general, it is advisable to take off your jewellery when you clean or go swimming. Due to the chemicals that you come into contact with, your jewellery will lose its shine. With plated jewellery, you have to be extra careful because you don't want to damage the thin layer of gold or silver. Are you taking a shower or a bath? Take off your jewellery first.
3. STORE YOUR JEWELLERY WELL
You probably have a small bowl or box in your house. Use this to store your jewellery at night, or when you are not wearing it. This protects your jewellery against bacteria and chemicals to ensure that the quality is kept. It also saves you a quest to find out where you last left your jewellery.. In the box! #Win-Win
4. WAIT A LITTLE WHILE BEFORE WEARING YOUR JEWELLERY
Wait a little while before wearing your jewellery? Are you not allowed to wear your jewellery? Of course you are! But don’t wear them before you are ready to leave. This way you expose your jewellery to your makeup, lotions, and perfume as little as possible. Treat your gold and silver plated jewellery as the icing on the cake. You know what we’re trying to say, right?
DONE CLEANING? THEN IT’S TIME TO WEAR YOUR JEWELLERY!
With the right maintenance, you can enjoy your Biba jewellery for a long time. If you treat your jewellery the right way, it will last for years! A little attention and care is enough to ensure that your gold and silver plated jewellery keeps shining. Just treat them like puppies!
